Bear
The term bear refers to carnivorous mammals of the family Ursidae. At least two species of bear have survived into the Fifth World: the brown bear of Eurasia and the American black bear of North America.
#Human relations
Humans have long associated bears with medicine, noticing how they treat their own illnesses with healing herbs. Many cultures, in fact, have stories about how people learned medicine by watching bears. Additionally, their solitary nature and hibernation draws comparison to wizards, who generally take on the role of healers in their communities.
Humans of the Fifth World largely leave bears in peace, respecting and (in the case of the brown bear) fearing them. However, on the rare occasion that humans hunt bear -- in the case of, for instance, a particularly aggressive bear that poses a threat to their community -- they will not let the meat, skin, and teeth go to waste.
#Bear Clans
Communities that have clan systems may have bear clans. Those in Bear Clan consider bears kin, and eating bear meat cannibalism. People generally stereotype Bear Clan members as wise loners inclined to wizardry. The community may take the dreams of Bear Clan members more seriously than those of people in other clans, believing them potentially prophetic.
